چکیده

An asymptotic representation for entrainment in a two-dimensional steady wake behind a circular cylinder is presented. The Reynolds number R ranges from 20 to 100. The representation is obtained from an asymptotic Navier-Stokes solution that includes the region of the wake where the non-parallelism of the streamlines is not yet negligible. The entrainment is determined as the flow rate variation in the streamwise direction. It is maximum at the beginning of the intermediate region just downstream of the symmetric counter rotating attached eddies. Moving downstream, it decreases continuously to zero, which is the asymptotic value in the far field. The entrainment increases with the Reynolds number. In terms of the normalized volumetric flow rate, the spatial evolution of the entrainment depends on the Reynolds number up to a distance of almost 20 body scales. Afterwards, the Reynolds dependence becomes weak. In the R range here considered, the entrainment can be considered negligible at a normalized distance from the body in between 50 − 60, that is, a distance value of the same order of magnitude of R. This result is in agreement with the scaling often adopted in wake stability studies to represent the slow spatial variation in a multiscaling framework.

Stochastic modelling and feedback control of bistability in a turbulent bluff body wake

A specific feature of three-dimensional bluff body wakes, flow bistability, is a subject of particular recent interest. This feature consists of a random flipping of the wake between two asymmetric configurations and is believed to contribute to the pressure drag of many bluff bodies. In this study we apply the modelling approach recently suggested for axisymmetric bodies by Rigas et al. (J. Fl...

Orr Sommerfeld Solver Using Mapped Finite Di?erence Scheme for Plane Wake Flow

Linear stability analysis of the three dimensional plane wake flow is performed using a mapped finite di?erence scheme in a domain which is doubly infinite in the cross–stream direction of wake flow. The physical domain in cross–stream direction is mapped to the computational domain using a cotangent mapping of the form y = ?cot(??). The Squire transformation [2], proposed by Squire, is also us...

Stratified Wake Behind an Accelerating Hydrofoil

Wakes of towed and self-propelled bodies moving in stably stratified flows are of relevance to environmental and ocean engineering applications. To date, the majority of studies focused on the wakes of spheres and cylinders in stratified flows. Stable stratification modulates the wake dynamics, leading to a significantly different flow compared to non-stratified wakes. The wakes of spheres and ...

Transition to bluff-body dynamics in the wake of vertical-axis wind turbines

We present experimental data to demonstrate that the far wake of a vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) exhibits features that are quantitatively similar to that of a circular cylinder with the same aspect ratio. For a fixed Reynolds number (Re ≈ 0.8 × 105) and variable tip-speed ratio, two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used to measure the velocity field in the wake of four diffe...

The structure of primary instability modes in the steady wake and separation bubble of a square cylinder

Flows past symmetric two-dimensional bluff bodies such as the circular cylinder, the square cylinder, and the normal flat plate produce large separation bubbles which (in the steady restriction) may become very elongated at comparatively low Reynolds numbers. The present work focuses on the steady/symmetric wake of a square cylinder at Re ≤ 300, which loses stability to anti-symmetric two-dimen...
